I used to struggle with anxiety. Each day, I’d wake up and feel extremely overwhelmed by a continual stream of negative thoughts. I knew that something had to change. The only problem? I didn’t know where to start.

But while listening to an audiobook during a walk around Downtown Calgary, I heard the following quote from Darren Hardy that changed my life forever:

“In essence, you make your choices, and then your choices make you.”

So below are a collection of common habits that you need to eliminate to improve your mental health. Each of these insights changed my life for the better. I’m sure they will do the same for you, too.

1. Trying to Suppress Your Thoughts

There’s a beautiful quote from Seneca, which is just as relevant today, as it was thousands of years ago during the Roman Empire. It says: “It is not what you endure that matters, but how you endure it.”

This insight changed my life. We can’t control external events or what other people say. However, we can always choose how we respond to any situation and how we deal with it in our minds.
