We often tell ourselves that we’re going to live forever.
We think that we’ll live to the ripe old age of 100 and spend the final years of our lives traveling, playing golf, or doing anything else that we find meaningful. But the truth is that we’re lying to ourselves.
Someday, you are going to die. You will leave this earth and spend the rest of eternity in an eternal void of nothingness. Death is inevitable. What you do in between now and that eventual moment is totally up to you. But don’t spend your entire life pretending like it’s never going to happen. That’s a recipe for disaster.
There’s no point in saying you’ll finally live a happier life in 50 years time when you’re 80. You might not even be alive then. However, you’re alive today. So let the inevitably of death motivate you to live in the present moment. The Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, said it best:
“You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think.”
