Many Politicians In Government Won’t Have To Live With The Consequences Of Their Decisions
Yet, they’re the ones dictating the future of our planet.
According to data published by the US government, “the average age of Members of the House at the beginning of the 116th Congress was 57.6 years; of Senators, 62.9 years.” The United Kingdom is very similar — with the average of an MP consistently above 50.
Unless there’s a sudden breakthrough in medical science, most politicians in government won’t have to live with the consequences of their terrible decisions.
The people currently dictating climate change policy probably won’t be the ones evacuating from cities that are no longer inhabitable due to rising tides and extreme heat. Nor will they have to experience famine and extreme poverty. Heck, that’s already happening in some parts of the world. But many of the people currently in government don’t care.
Politicians sitting in Washington DC, London, and many other cities around the world refuse to act with a sense of urgency because they (probably) won’t have to face the music. Instead, they just kick the can down the road because climate change is an inconvenient problem that can be solved another day.
