Hey friends,

Someone recently sent me a DM asking what it’s like to be a full-time writer. They wanted to know how to make enough money to sustain a reasonable lifestyle.

Here’s what I replied:

  • Adopt a strong work ethic. It’s going to take longer than you think. You’ll probably have to work much harder than initially expected. It’s difficult to predict what articles will do well. Part of it is luck. But if you increase the number of articles you publish, the quality will improve, too.
  • Study the algorithm. Every successful writer I know does this in their spare time. They analyze what articles performed well. They also look at ones that didn’t and identify the reasons behind their lack of success. For example, was it the title? Topic? Thumbnail? Intro?
  • You need to love writing. You’ll eventually get burnt out if you write solely for money. It’s inevitable. The motivation to write every day will fade if you don’t earn as much revenue as initially hoped. It sucks for everyone. But if you genuinely love writing, you’ll do it anyway.
